You're the CollegeHumor of Newgrounds, only without the sketches that are garbage being added to the mix every now and then.

Thanks!

I completely agree with the people criticizing this notion that you're suggesting; I just can't watch this without feeling as though you're Stefan Molyneuxing all over my tits, so I'll explain my rationale behind that reaction.

The first few points that you made about the job market being incredibly dog-eat-dog and about it being resoundingly fucked up for people already living in impoverished states to be made to feel even more like shit through an encapsulating stigma regarding their position are very valid and I think that these are matters that we should consider resolving; I don't think there's anything wrong with socialism and federal intervention in matters that affect the economy seems appropriate to me, but you're over simplifying this to say that if people were simply endowed the money needed to live sustainably, it would fix the economy. You point to studies in which people have been directly given the money they need to survive and took such as incentive to improve their lives and become entrepreneurs, but what I think you're failing to understand is that if everyone were given a fixed amount of money needed for basic income, it would not simply be a larger example of the same result.

I think a significant part of the reason that people become entrepreneurs when given the money they need for basic income is due to our current systemic arrangements; they're anomalies for being given such an opportunity in life and so they utilize it by creating businesses and taking it further. But, if this opportunity suddenly became the norm, who's to say that the majority of people wouldn't react by turning into drooling ignoramuses that watch Jersey Shore reruns all day? Everyone is is guaranteed the $12,000 a year they need to survive, so why would they feel so inclined to hold this matter to scrutiny any longer? This argument of yours that people will become more entrepreneurial and productive in a society that gives them everything they need seems tantamount to someone arguing that because attendance of grade school is legally required of those in western countries, the majorty will be able to discern the merits of this arrangement and achieve an Ivy League scholarship for their post secondary education instead of dropping out with a GED at 16 to play video games and masturbate all day.

As for your argument that as debt slaves, we've been brainwashed by the rich into believing that humans can be lazy so that their taxes won't increase, I honestly find that absurd. Of course bequeathing pedestals upon the rich so that they might become richer instead of resolving poverty is a corrupt economic practice, but this recurring argument that people are being indoctrinated by the rich and have no agency to critically consider the matter for themselves is ludicrous; you're just gas-lighting the key problem with your argument away by suggesting that it doesn't exist. I'm not saying that homeless people deserve to be homeless; I'm very aware of the nuances behind that situation and understand that a lot of them would relinquish anything they have to offer just to work at McDonald's, only to receive no call back to their homeless shelter, but can't ignore the reality of human incompetence in general. I agree with your argument that the problems you are identifying are indeed problems, but sincerely opine that your solution is trite and oversimplified.

Nice animation style.

Thanks for the well thought-out, polite response.

I can't stand Stefan Molyneux either, so I apologize if this reminds you of him. I'd just like to point out that this is not 'my' solution. I'm trying to get an idea across in a short time that has a long history, lots of research, and the support of thousands of economists.

I suggest reading this article about how basic income was almost passed in America:
https://thecorrespondent.com/4503/the-bizarre-tale-of-president-nixon-and-his-basic-income-bill/173117835-c34d6145

I never claimed that people don't have agency. You can always read between the lines and figure out what others are trying to get you to think, and where their motivations are coming from. I'm just saying that not everyone has the time for that. It takes a lot of education and effort, and so propaganda has an effect.

As for the problem of motivation, I don't think that Basic Income is a magical answer. But my opinion is that the threat of destitution is not a just way to motivate people. Better motivation comes from elsewhere... it feels good to contribute to society, to have a role in the community, and to figure out what you can do best. There's a reason people volunteer. And of course, most people would like more than just $12,000 per year. It doesn't get you too far.

I think that we're really uncomfortable about people sitting around and doing things we disapprove of. But it doesn't bother me at all what people choose to do with their time. It's none of my business. If someone chooses to voluntarily drop out of the workforce and live on the minimum, that's another spot opened up for someone more willing to do the job.

But I'll go back to the evidence... in the 70s the basic income studies in New Jersey found, to everyone's surprise, that people hardly cut back their work hours at all. You posit that it's just because it was a small number of people, but every study around the world has found similar results.

Damn it, Joe; why are you uploading looping .swfs instead of converting the flash into an .avi through Swivel and then posting it? It's 2017, man; this had better be part of the April Fool's joke.

Ukinojoe responds:

Because swfs are cool :(

This is probably my fifth time watching this; I couldn't seem to assess whether the guy's response at the end was "good" or "girls;" my brain seems to have a habit of assuming that any joke I can't hear distinctly with immediacy involves innuendo, but I've instead realized that I'm terrible at understanding French accents.

A lot of work was certainly put forth into this; I like the pointy ockeroid-esque style for the character animation and the way that you draw backgrounds; it's really neatly packed.

QELINDENT responds:

Hey thanks a lot man!, also he said ''good'' at the end
The joke was that the guy turned into the other one by listening to his mixtape

Nice political commentary. The animation conveys the point, but the caricatures are a tad bland considering the style of satire here. I think it would be very augmentative if you were to draw any political figures you're laying into as grotesque monsters for the next animation.

While I subscribe to the idea that everything is derivative in one way or another and therefore don't share Z3R0R3Z' opinion that there's anything wrong with parodies, I have to agree with him to an extent. I watched this earlier today and didn't so much as smirk at any of the attempts at jokes throughout it and rewatching it has had no different a result. Humor is subjective, of course and I'm not usually one to leave reviews entailing myself droning on about not finding a Flash funny for exactly that reason, but in the case of this one, the joke where Zelda lifts her skirt and tells the fat dream Link that she wants him to fuck her strikes me as text book Flash Animator innuendo-filled goofiness that has been a paradigm in internet cartoons for a long time at this point (not implying plagiarism of course, but more of utilizing a very common trope that has arguably been pushed to exhaustion). The second segment flows really nicely, but it drags about a lot; its kind of a Family Guy-esque joke.

You and TopSpintheFuzzy are amazingly talented and inspiring fellows and I'm honestly always enthralled to see anything from either of you two that allows me to see showcases of your fantastic art and animation. I don't think it makes any sense to rate on the basis of whether humor landed, because I think that it makes sense to judge how a cartoon is put together on a fundamental level, since that can actually be remedied; in my view, this knocks every factor out of the park in that respect. The animation, voices, backgrounds, and story structure in this are all nice and polished. I just think there's no harm in holding your writing process to scrutiny during production and taking in critique without inimically dismissing it. I understand that this kind of stuff can take copious amounts of time to make and to release it only to be met with so much as an inkling of a claim toward unoriginality is almost preordained to get on a creator's bad side, but sometimes, even reviews that seem to be written by blithering idiots at face value can be worth taking with a grain of salt.

That doesn't mean that I'm not a blithering idiot as well and shouldn't fuck off; sorry for the block of text. I haven't had much sleep and will probably regret whatever it is I'm on about right now should I ever read it again; I just felt compelled to type something when the first thing I stumbled upon when I scrolled down to read the comments and the first one I saw with a reply consisted of a polite critic being shot down; there's a difference between entitlement and critique; you can deliver whatever you can conjure up and whether to consider, dismiss, or even hearken to input is entirely up to you. You can and should do whatever resonates with you with your work and someone expounding their opinion on it doesn't tacitly or overtly imply that you're expected to provide anything else.

Fuck me and fuck this review. You guys are beautiful; keep it up.

MrChambers responds:

Hey man thanks for the very long and polite review. It was a good read and you have a lot of good points in there! And after reading this i'm starting to think my response to Z3R0R3Z was an over reaction. However I still disagree with his critiq, even though he might have been trying to help. And I know I sound stubborn in saying so but I just don't think there is much I can do with "this animation is textbook" Or the fact that he says I might even be imitating other creators. Cause the truth is, its just not true! I also don't think I was "playing it too damn easy", I just wanted to make a stupid cartoon where some random guy shouts at link.

Sweet stuff as per usual. Someone needs to coin an adjective just to use it in describing the charm in your work. How's "flavorfied?" What about "vibey?" Nevermind...

golfinho responds:

lets go to kill all faggots forever

Nice animation and art assets as per usual. I saw this earlier today and avoided leaving a review on account of assuming it to be an older submission, but I just noticed its presence on the front page.

The only criticism I have regarding this is the gradient behind Meowth as he exclaims "eat shit and die!" I think that a transition between any color and black is visual ruin.

You definitely added a lot to the joke with this!

DoopieDoodles responds:

Thank you! It actually is an old animation. I'm reposting my stuff from my YouTube channel a little at a time. :) But thank you so much for your input!

Man, I completely forgot about the greatness that is this series. Great animation and story, I love how your stretchy art style complements the narrative. I'm glad to see that you're still making new installments to this!

My only criticism regarding this would be that the tweened movie clip animation from 1:36-1:40. It's not that I'd consider there to be anything awry about use of tweens, I'd opine that they're overly stigmatized and a good way to go about things economically (especially for independent animators), though, I really feel that particular instance took away from the energy of that particular scene in the cartoon. I'm not suggesting that you should completely circumvent tweens for the sake of your work, but rather that I think there are scenes where they're appropriate for conveying something and scenes where they're out of place (I'd consider your use of more flagrant tweens at 2:02 to have been just fine due to it not being part of any climax, for instance). It's a subjective nitpick, so, I'm not going to rate this lower because of it, though, I just thought I should mention it as something to consider.

Great toon!

Jae responds:

Thanks for the in depth and helpful critique! I appreciate the review!!

I'm a voice actor; I'll also make cartoons for jams and the like here and there!
